A Public Information Intern is needed to help our mission through their work in content creation and digital outreach and event coordination and media relations. The job requires someone who pays attention to details and understands different cultures to use their communication abilities in a workplace that has different cultural backgrounds and works toward a common goal. Organizational Context and Internship Opportunity

How does the United Nations communicate its vital work to the peoples it serves? The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Mexico City is the principal source of information about the UN system in Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.UNIC Mexico serves as the Department of Global Communications through its operations to transform worldwide directives into specific local activities while working with media outlets and civil organizations and public audiences to create knowledge about UN objectives.

Our team in Mexico City needs a dedicated Public Information Intern who will bring innovative ideas to our organization. The United Nations system offers this program as a practical training experience which allows participants to learn about strategic communications and media relations and digital content creation and public outreach activities. You will work under the direct supervision of the UNIC Director and/or the National Information Officer to help spread United Nations information to various regional community members.

This unpaid, in-person internship is designed for students and recent graduates who are passionate about public information, multilingual communication, and supporting the ideals of the United Nations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the intern will be responsible for one or more of the following duties:

  • The individual will work with Spanish and other languages to create, edit, and produce written and audiovisual and digital content which will be used on the UNIC website and social media and printed materials.
  • The team will conduct research activities and they will also assist with media outreach while they create press releases and newsletters and briefing notes.
  • The team will handle website updates for UNIC Mexico while they create digital multimedia content. The candidate should possess skills to build AR and VR products and have experience with Boolean search and social media monitoring tools and analytics.
  • The team will reach out to civil society groups and academic institutions and non-governmental organizations and businesses in Mexico and Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The team will help with event and workshop and campaign organization which will focus on UN priority topics.
  • The team will help coordinate communication work between UN System agencies in Mexico through the UN Communication Group while they implement UN strategic communication across Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • The staff member will complete assigned tasks to help UNIC achieve its daily work requirements and strategic goals.

Qualifications and Special Skills

Education:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Applicants must either be currently studying or have completed a graduate school program which requires at least a second university degree. OR
  • Applicants must either be currently studying or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program which requires at least a bachelor’s degree.

Experience:

  • No prior employment experience is required for professionals.
  • This evidence should be manifest in the forms of your degrees, your professional training, and your skills to show that you can deliver during your stay there.

Languages:

  • Fluency in oral and written Spanish is required.
  • Fluency in English is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • The person shows a strong interest for public information and communications and journalism and international relations.
  • The applicant possesses research and drafting and editing skills at an excellent level.
  • The user has basic knowledge of digital communication tools and social media platforms and multimedia production.
  • The person demonstrates capacity to perform well in multicultural team settings.

Internship Conditions & Application Process

  • The internship provides no financial payment to the intern. All costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, insurance, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Mexico are responsible for obtaining the appropriate visa and work authorization.
  • The internship requires interns to work full-time in Mexico City for a duration of three to six months which totals 35 hours of work each week.
  • Applicants must indicate which educational criteria they meet and may be required to provide official certification at a later stage.
