The system which provides ongoing funding for Mercy Corps operations depends on two elements. We are looking for an imaginative Director of Acquisition and Growth who will design and implement the funding system which will operate throughout the United States. Your responsibility for the multi-million-dollar acquisition program extends to developing its strategy and budget while monitoring its results across digital and direct mail and emerging channels and performance marketing.

Your mission: replace and grow the donor file, build a world-class monthly donor acquisition program, and ensure every new supporter is positioned for long-term value. Director of Acquisition and Growth

Location: United States (Flexible Home Base)
Department: Philanthropic Growth & Engagement (PG&E)
Position Status: Regular, Full-Time, Exempt
Salary Range: $90,000 – $120,000 USD annually (commensurate with experience)

Essential Responsibilities

Acquisition Strategy & Growth Leadership

  • The organization requires someone to manage the complete acquisition strategy which includes all online and offline marketing channels together with digital acquisition methods and direct mail campaigns and performance media and existing face-to-face communication methods and upcoming acquisition strategies.
  • The organization needs to establish digital acquisition as its main growth driver while simultaneously developing a unified program that combines offline channels with multiple digital acquisition methods.
  • The organization needs to establish a monthly donor acquisition program which will build sustainable growth while creating long-lasting donor relationships instead of focusing on immediate donor acquisition.
  • The organization needs to establish new acquisition channels together with new approaches which will create diversified risk protection and increased reach capabilities while supporting ongoing file expansion.
  • The organization needs to lead performance-based awareness campaigns together with Brand Marketing to create awareness spending that directly results in measurable acquisition success.
  • The Director of Retention & Loyalty and I will work together to create strategies which combine acquisition and retention through mutual agreement on donor quality metrics and targeting parameters and long-term value frameworks.
  • The organization needs to create acquisition plans together with investment strategies and performance expectations which will help achieve its growth objectives.

Performance, Analytics & Financial Management

  • The business manager role requires me to oversee mass market acquisition operations while I control all expenses and revenue budgets through the annual budgeting process and subsequent forecasting activities. The investment decision process requires my leadership to evaluate acquisition costs together with first-year benefits and return on investment and lifetime value assessment.
  • My task involves creating performance measurement systems which weight donor quality and retention results and long-term file maintenance as equal to standard volume and efficiency assessment methods. The Development Operations team works together with analytics teams and external agencies to develop better segmentation methods and testing approaches which will lead to improved performance assessment processes.
  • The organization uses data and testing results together with practical business insights to make decisions about expansion and to identify investment risks while improving the efficiency of customer acquisition processes.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Influence

  • The organization needs you to work with Brand Marketing to build the website fundraising funnel which should deliver digital experiences that achieve acquisition and conversion objectives.
  • The teams at PG&E need to work together across all functions to create acquisition strategies which will help the organization achieve its main objectives.
  • The organization requires me to oversee agency and vendor partnerships by establishing performance standards which I will use to assess their performance.
  • The organization needs me to represent Mass Market Fundraising during cross-departmental planning and investment discussions which focus on organizational growth and awareness and acquisition activities.

Team & Function Building

  • You will establish the future acquisition framework of Mercy Corps while working with the Senior Director to determine required staff positions for organizational growth.
  • The organization will begin to hire acquisition personnel who will manage the acquisition process as their operational needs increase according to their business requirements.
  • The acquisition function will establish a culture that promotes performance evaluation, testing practices, responsibility, and ongoing educational development.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • The implementation of all work activities requires your active learning of safeguarding principles which you will then apply to your work and to your responsibilities through risk assessment and risk management practices.
  • The organization requires its members to practice Mercy Corps’ values by treating program participants and team members and all other stakeholders with respect and dignity.
  • Team members should maintain open communication with each other while using reporting systems which include the Integrity Hotline to address any issues they encounter.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • None initially, but this role is designed to grow. Over time, you will hire and manage acquisition-focused staff as the function scales.

Accountability

Reports Directly To: Senior Director, Mass Market Fundraising

Works Directly With: Director of Retention & Loyalty; Brand Marketing; Communications; Development Operations; analytics partners; external agencies and vendors

Accountability to Participants and Stakeholders

Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our program participants, community partners, other stakeholders, and to international standards guiding relief and development work. Minimum Qualifications & Transferable Skills

  • Education requires completion of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience requires more than 6 years of mass market fundraising work experience which includes leading donor acquisition efforts and managing large-scale performance-based fundraising initiatives.
  • Acquisition Expertise: Digital acquisition and performance marketing work constitutes my core expertise which I have applied to extend program development across multiple years.
  • Multi-Channel Mastery: My work experience includes leading acquisition campaigns that used both digital and traditional advertising channels. My strong familiarity with new channels such as face-to-face fundraising will benefit your organization.
  • Monthly Giving Focus: My successful history includes developing and expanding monthly donor programs which provide continuous value for extended periods.
  • Financial Acumen: The candidate possesses advanced financial skills together with analytical abilities which enable them to handle sizable budgetary responsibilities and make precise financial predictions while delivering performance assessments.
  • Technical Collaboration: The candidate has worked in dynamic marketing technology environments which needed him to develop effective teamwork skills with technical staff for bettering segmentation processes and automation functions and performance evaluation methods.
  • Cross-Functional Agility: The candidate demonstrates his ability to work well with different teams and successfully complete joint objectives together with marketing and fundraising and operations staff members.
  • Mission Alignment: The candidate shows sincere dedication to humanitarian work while he functions effectively in complex organizations that deal with multiple expansion challenges.
  • People Leadership: The candidate has previous experience in managing people which enables him to develop and guide high-achieving teams through extended periods.
