Organizational Context: Amplifying a Critical Mission

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) operates as the primary international environmental body which establishes global environmental standards and ensures that United Nations agencies execute environmental protection measures for sustainable development. The Cool Coalition operates as a worldwide partnership which unites multiple stakeholders to advance the development of sustainable cooling systems which use energy efficiently and protect the climate. The Coalition unifies essential stakeholders to create climate solutions which promote cooling system improvements that protect human health and drive economic growth through sustainable development.

The Communications Intern position provides a special opportunity because it allows interns to make direct contributions to global environmental initiatives. The intern will join the active team which manages the Cool Coalition’s outreach activities at the Paris Duty Station. This position enables professionals to gain practical experience about international environmental communications through their work at the United Nations. The successful candidate will create sustainable cooling content which will attract worldwide audiences while managing the knowledge base that supports the Coalition’s collaborative efforts. The internship provides an essential career opportunity for individuals who are dedicated to climate action and want to work in international environmental governance through multilateralism.

Duties and Responsibilities: A Hands-On Communications Role

1. Digital Content Creation and Social Media Management:

  • You provide daily assistance to maintain the Cool Coalition’s social media accounts which include Twitter/X and LinkedIn and other platforms by creating content that maintains a consistent and appealing brand voice.
  • The team will create and plan social media posts which will include written content and visual elements and short videos to support the main organizational communication strategy and important advocacy events.
  • The team will monitor social media channels to observe user interactions while they measure essential metrics through both native tools and UN-provided resources to develop better content strategies that will expand their audience reach and effectiveness.

2. Website Management and Digital Presence:

  • The Cool Coalition needs your help to keep their online headquarters operational by you updating their content which includes news articles and resource libraries and partner profiles and event pages to maintain accurate and engaging information.
  • The team needs your assistance to review web pages which require assessment of their clarity and user experience and basic search engine optimization (SEO) principles and compliance with UNEP and Cool Coalition branding guidelines.
  • The role serves as a connection point which enables content requirements to be transformed into technical work through collaboration with web developers and service providers who handle issue reporting and update requests and testing of new website features or functionalities.

3. Newsletter Production and Email Outreach:

  • You need to participate in creating the Cool Coalition’s newsletters and their specific email updates. The process requires me to assist by selecting content and writing text and revising content to improve its readability and tone and designing email layouts in the specified marketing system.
  • The team needs my assistance to monitor essential email campaign performance metrics which include open rates and click-through rates and engagement metrics. The team needs my expertise to improve subscriber engagement through content and design enhancements.

4. Design and Visual Communication Support:

  • The design tools and templates of UN design tools and templates which have received authorization must be used to create visual communication materials that match brand specifications. This includes social media graphics, event flyers, one-pager fact sheets, and simple infographics that distill complex information.
  • The team helps create and standardize visual elements for PowerPoint presentations which will be used at high-level events and partner briefings and internal meetings to maintain consistent professional quality and clear message delivery.

5. Knowledge Management and Administrative Support:

  • You need assistance in creating and sending both internal and external communication emails.
  • The team needs help with monitoring their central Cool Coalition communications inbox because they need to handle incoming messages while marking important messages which require team action between their operational hours.
  • The contact databases which include partner lists and distribution lists for events and announcements require maintenance through accurate updates to critical information.
  • The team needs my assistance with their communications work because I will accomplish my administrative responsibilities through my work to help them achieve their goals of implementing their Cool Coalition work program.

All duties will be carried out in strict accordance with UNEP rules, procedures, and ethical guidelines, under the close mentorship of the assigned supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Education: Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
    • Study requirements need students to demonstrate their enrollment in a graduate school program which offers second university degrees and higher academic degrees. Students must be enrolled in their last year of a first university degree program which requires at least a Bachelor’s degree to meet this requirement. The candidate must hold an eligible university degree and needs to start the internship within one year after graduation if the candidate gets selected for an internship position.
    • Students must select their field of study from communications and journalism and international relations and media studies and marketing and graphic design and environmental studies and related fields.
  • Technical Skills and Competencies:
    • The applicant has acquired proficiency in all basic software applications which includes Microsoft Office 365 Suite that consists of Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook.
    • The candidate shows basic understanding of website content management systems which Drupal provides as a special benefit.
    • The candidate has used email marketing platforms and newsletter platforms which include Mailchimp and Sendinblue for actual work experience.
    • The applicant possesses essential graphic design abilities which allow him to use Adobe Creative Suite tools including Photoshop and Illustrator and InDesign and Canva.
    • The candidate can use online collaboration and communication tools which include Microsoft Teams and SharePoint to complete work.
    • The user has fundamental knowledge of social media analytics tools which include Twitter Analytics and LinkedIn Insights and digital performance measurement tools.
  • Personal Attributes and Values:
    • The candidate exhibits strong interest in United Nations work while demonstrating personal dedication to UN Charter principles.
    • The person possesses strong cultural awareness skills that enable them to build successful relationships with people who have diverse cultural traditions and belief systems. The person shows readiness to learn about different beliefs while demonstrating respect and understanding of those beliefs.
    • The internship does not require any work experience but applicants should showcase their previous work in communications and social media and design in their application.
  • Languages:
    • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, as it is the primary working language of the internship.
    • The ability to speak any official United Nations language Arabic Chinese French Russian or Spanish serves as a major benefit because of the worldwide scope of work and the Paris-based operations.

Internship Conditions

  • The United Nations does not provide any financial compensation to its interns. The intern together with their sponsoring institution must bear all expenses for travel, visa procurement, accommodation, insurance costs, and daily living expenses.
  • The internship requires non-French citizen interns to handle both the visa and work authorization process through their own financial resources. Candidates who receive job offers should verify their specific visa requirements before accepting the offer.
  • The United Nations recruitment process does not involve any fees which applicants must pay during application, interview, processing, or training stages. The United Nations does not require any information about applicants’ bank account details.
