Organizational Context: Communicating Resilience in the Pacific
The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an international organization that is based on a treaty and aims to support developing countries in making their economies strong, inclusive, and environmentally friendly. Along with the Solomon Islands’ Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), GGGI is executing the project named Strengthening Inclusive Adaptation Capacity in Solomon Islands (SIAC-SI). This important project, among other things, is performing risk assessments, creating a National Adaptation Plan (NAP), and improving the mobilization of resources, which are all increasing the efficiency of the country’s climate adaptation activities.
The internship program at GGGI is a distinct opportunity for professional growth for students and recent graduates to acquire hands-on experience in a multi-ethnic, mission-oriented environment. We are now seeking a creative and proactive Communications & Graphic Design Intern to join our team in Honiara. This role is central to translating complex climate adaptation work into clear, compelling, and visually engaging messages for diverse audiences—from local communities to international partners.
Assignment Overview
The Communications & Graphic Design Intern will work closely with the SIAC-SI Program Team to support a wide range of communication activities. The intern’s core responsibilities will include:
- Visual Communication & Design: Produce communication materials like infographics, posters, banners, fact sheets, and digital graphics that conform to the GGGI branding and have a big impact.
- Content Development: Write clear and captivating content for social media, newsletters, workshop summaries, community updates, and awareness campaigns.
- Event & Campaign Support: Help in the organization and realization of project events, conferences, and workshops, which include the creation of promotional materials and the management of communication channels.
- Digital Engagement: Create social media graphics and visual content that will facilitate the enhancement of online presence and public engagement across digital platforms.
- Storytelling & Documentation: The project documentation supported by visual storytelling and brief textual summaries will be facilitated by this.
- Research & Monitoring: Keep an eye on the news and research on climate adaptation that is relevant, to communication strategies and summarize the key messages for the team.
- Strategic Support: Be a part of the process in the creation of strategic communication materials for the public that will be used in outreach and also actively take part in the planning of communication campaigns.
- Regional Collaboration: As needed, offer additional communication support to the larger GGGI Pacific initiatives.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a student in the Bachelor’s (final year), Master’s, or PhD program, or be a recent graduate (up to 12 months ago).
- Be involved in academic research or study in a field that is directly connected with the work of GGGI.
- Have a high level of proficiency in English.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Academic Background: Enrolled in or graduated from Communications, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Journalism, Media Studies, or a related discipline.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.
- Design Proficiency: Proven ability in using graphic design software as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), Canva, or any other similar programs.
- Creativity: An ability to produce splendid infographics and digital content with a devout eye for visual design.
- Digital Savvy: Knowledge of social media management, content creation, and digital communication platforms; this is a plus.
- Organizational Skills: A person who pays attention to details and possesses strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Interest & Adaptability: The candidate should display a real interest in environmental issues, climate resilience, or sustainable development and should have the ability to work efficiently in a multicultural, dynamic environment.
- Location & Equipment: The applicant must be residing in Honiara, Solomon Islands, with a personal computer being a plus.
Selection Process, Terms & Conditions
Selection Process:
- Applications will be evaluated based on: eligibility, relevance of academic and practical experience, and the candidate’s motivation to contribute to development work.
- Due to the high volume of applications, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
Terms & Conditions:
- Duration: 3 to 6 months. The internship should start not later than a year after the graduation, and it is better to initiate it before the graduation.
- Stipend: A monthly stipend of USD $500 is paid (unless the sponsoring institution covers the cost).
- Logistics: The intern will cover all expenses related to travel, visa, insurance, accommodation, and daily living costs. GGGI will issue a visa support letter.
- Confidentiality: It is forbidden for the interns to disclose any unpublished information they acquire during their internship.
- Working Hours: The interns’ attendance should match the regular business hours, and their absence will be depending on the approval beforehand.
- Certificate: A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the internship if it is successfully concluded.
