The United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS) delivers essential operational functions which support the United Nations Secretariat in its worldwide mission by providing various services that include human resources, supply chain management, and specialized administrative support together with technological solutions. Our work secures essential resources which enable success in both peace operations and development programs and diplomatic initiatives.
We are building a dynamic candidate pool for Data Analytics and Business Intelligence Interns to join our teams in New York. Interns will be assigned to one of the six main divisions of DOS based on their abilities and professional history and personal interests. The internship program provides participants with an exceptional opportunity to utilize their analytical and technical expertise in solving current operational problems which occur in a global multicultural environment while they learn about the role of data-based decision making in advancing international peace and development and humanitarian efforts.
Interns will work as integral members of their assigned teams, undertaking meaningful projects, receiving mentorship from experienced professionals, and contributing to tools and analyses that impact UN operations worldwide. This is an unpaid, full-time internship open to current graduate students or recent graduates.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a designated staff member, interns may be assigned a range of responsibilities, including:
- The process of data analysis and processing begins with data collection which leads to data cleansing and subsequent data analysis from multiple sources to meet operational needs and track performance results.
- The statistical programming and modeling field utilizes mathematical programming methods together with statistical techniques for data analysis which enables users to create predictive models and conduct optimization research.
- The reporting process involves converting data results into comprehensive written reports which include dashboards and visual elements that serve both stakeholders and company executives.
- The process of tool development and support includes designing new data products while providing technical assistance for current reports and dashboards and analytical tools used for data analysis.
- The research and innovation department investigates new analytical techniques and approaches and develops new metrics to improve data-driven decision-making processes used in DOS operations.
- The team needs me to complete additional tasks which help them achieve their goals.
Qualifications and Special Skills
Education:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:
- The applicant needs to meet one of these three requirements which include: The applicant must be currently registered in a graduate program that offers either a Master’s degree or a PhD degree or an equivalent program. The applicant must be in their last year of study for a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent first university degree program. The applicant must have obtained a university degree within the last 12 months according to the above definition.

- The three fields of study includes Economics and Statistics and Operations Research.
- The three disciplines of Engineering and Mathematics and Business Intelligence.

- The person demonstrates proficiency with standard software applications and shows a strong interest in data analysis tools and methods.

- The person possesses exceptional skills in analytical work and communication and organizational abilities.

Internship Terms and Conditions
- You must spend at least three months in your current position which you can extend to six months.
- Employees must work full-time at UN Headquarters in New York according to UN hybrid work policies. The supervising office will provide details about their specific working schedule.
- The internship does not provide any payment to interns. The intern must cover all expenses which include travel costs and visa fees and accommodation charges and insurance expenses and daily living costs.
