Save the Children is hiring a School Inclusion Advocate. The path requires your passionate dedication and skilled capabilities to succeed. Our school requires a School Inclusion Advocate who will defend educational rights for children and young people throughout Darwin and Palmerston. You will act as their representative by providing direct assistance to students and their families who require help with system navigation and school support acquisition. The position requires an expert who values teamwork more than disputes and works towards sustainable results that benefit children. From remote areas to major cities, we provide our complete range of services to every state and territory while maintaining our commitment to child-centered practices which use child-based methods as our foundation.

The Student Advocacy Service works as an essential program which ensures that all children receive equal opportunities to access valuable educational experiences. We provide services to students who are between preschool age and 18 years old together with their families who face the possibility of being excluded from educational settings. Our approach uses child-centered methods while focusing on strengths to develop solutions that enable students and their parents together with schools to establish agreements which support their educational success.

We are in search of a School Inclusion Advocate who will join our Winnellie team as a committed individual with strong determination. The government of Northern Territory (NTG) schools, which you represent in this key position, require your support to identify and remove all obstacles that prevent their students from participating in educational programs. Your work will establish enduring results which enable students to belong to their educational environment while learning and achieving their full potential through your ability to build connections between families and schools while you advocate for their educational rights.

Your Impact: Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will make a tangible difference by:

  • Direct Advocacy and Support Work: The program supports children and their families through direct partnership to assess their abilities and set educational objectives while creating methods to improve their school participation.
  • System Navigation: The program helps families and students to understand and use educational systems including its rules and procedures and official methods which will give them knowledge and power to navigate the system.
  • Network Building and Referral Process: The program helps students and their families to access vital support connections which include community organizations and information resources that meet their complete requirements outside of school.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: The organization collaborates closely with important partners which include Department of Education personnel NTG school staff and external service providers to create solutions which address the child’s requirements.
  • Program Integrity and Reporting: The organization needs to collect client information through electronic systems for case notes and client data which will be used to monitor the program and plan and evaluate and report results to demonstrate our program’s effectiveness.

Who We Are Looking For: Qualifications, Skills & Experience

You are a skilled and compassionate practitioner whose values align with a child-rights approach. You are passionate about educational equity and possess the resilience and diplomacy needed to create change in complex situations.

Essential Requirements:

  • The applicant has extensive experience working together with children and young people and families and possesses specialized skills to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds and geographically isolated areas.
  • The candidate possesses complete knowledge of Northern Territory Government school operations and their educational frameworks.
  • The individual demonstrates knowledge about the pressures which affect vulnerable families and understands how these pressures determine the factors which protect or endanger child development and educational success.
  • The applicant possesses strong administrative capabilities which enable them to create and maintain precise and timely records and case notes within an electronic client database system.
  • The applicant possesses outstanding communication abilities which include negotiation skills and interpersonal skills that enable them to establish trust and handle delicate discussions.
  • The individual currently holds a Northern Territory Working with Children Check (Ochre Card) or possesses the capacity to obtain one before starting work.
  • The individual possesses a current and valid Australian driver’s license.

Highly Desirable:

  • Formal qualifications in Social Work, Education, Community Development, or a related discipline.
  • Lived experience or deep cultural understanding of the communities we serve in the Darwin and Palmerston regions.
