About (UNHRC)
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), established in 2006 and based in Geneva, is a vital UN body dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Comprising 47 member states elected by the UN General Assembly, it employs mechanisms like the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to assess member states’ rights records, Special Procedures to investigate abuses, and emergency sessions to address crises like those in Ukraine and Gaza.
Despite its role in advancing rights for marginalized groups and exposing violations in places like Syria and North Korea, the UNHRC faces criticism for including members with poor rights records and accusations of political bias, particularly in its focus on certain countries like Israel. While imperfect, the council remains a crucial platform for global human rights advocacy, striving to hold violators accountable and set international standards—even as debates persist about its effectiveness and neutrality.
