Work Location

The internship offers flexible working arrangements, including:

  • Hybrid (combination of in-person and remote work)

Overview of the Internship

This internship is unpaid and can be undertaken on a full-time (35 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week) basis. The selected intern will work under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, Gender Communications, within the Strategic Communications Section (SCS) of the Office of the Director for Coordination and Shared Services (ODCSS). This office supports the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and Peace Operations (DPO) by ensuring effective coordination and integration of their mandates.

Departmental Context

Department of Peace Operations (DPO)

  • Provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide.
  • Engages with the UN Security Council, troop-contributing countries, and conflict parties to implement mandates.
  • Supports military, police, mine action, and civilian efforts in peacekeeping and political missions.

Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA)

  • Focuses on conflict prevention, mediation, and sustaining peace.
  • Works across five key areas:
    • Early warning and analysis
    • Conflict prevention and peacemaking
    • Political crisis management
    • Post-conflict peacebuilding
    • Strengthening global partnerships

Responsibilities

The intern will support strategic communications, public advocacy, and digital outreach on issues related to:

  • Gender equality and Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda
  • Gender parity in UN peacekeeping
  • Prevention of misconduct, including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA)

Specific Tasks Include:

Content Creation & Digital Communications

  • Assist in developing multimedia content (graphics, videos, social media posts) for UN Peacekeeping’s digital platforms, including:
    • Official UN and UN Peacekeeping websites
    • Social media channels (Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Medium)
  • Draft and edit publications (fact sheets, newsletters, donor reports) on gender and conduct-related issues.

Social Media & Public Engagement

  • Monitor social media trends on gender and misconduct to inform communications strategies.
  • Support live coverage of events (e.g., International Women’s Day, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence).

Campaigns & Advocacy

  • Assist in planning and executing awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and workshops on gender and SEA prevention.
  • Propose innovative storytelling ideas to amplify UN Peacekeeping’s work on gender equality.

Research & Reporting

  • Prepare internal summaries, media reports, and presentations on gender-related initiatives.
  • Track media coverage and public perception of UN policies on gender and conduct.

General Support

  • Perform additional tasks as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Special Skills

Educational Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in or completed a graduate program (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent).
  • Final-year undergraduate student (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Preferred Fields of Study:

  • Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Gender Studies, Public Relations, Political Science, or related fields.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with social media analytics (Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn).
  • Strong writing and editing skills for diverse audiences.

Language Requirements
