Work Location

Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the Office of the Director within the UN Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH), which is part of the Office of Support Operations (OSO) under the Department of Operational Support (DOS). DOS is the backbone of the United Nations Secretariat, delivering comprehensive operational support, advisory services, and innovative solutions to entities across the UN system including departments, peace operations, regional commissions, and offices away from headquarters.

DHMOSH plays a critical role in safeguarding the health and well-being of UN personnel worldwide. Its services span medical entitlement administration, occupational safety and health, clinical governance, medical workforce management, public health initiatives, and the UN System Medical Emergency Response Strategy. Additionally, DHMOSH oversees the Secretariat’s counselling services, ensuring holistic support for staff members.

This position is a full-time, unpaid opportunity requiring a commitment of five days per week. The initial appointment is for a period of three months, with the potential for an extension to a maximum of six months. Part-time arrangements (20-35 hours per week) are also available. The internship will be conducted within the Public Health Unit of DHMOSH and can be undertaken fully remotely.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Medical Director/Senior Medical Officer, the intern will engage in a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Supporting the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), health plans, and guidelines for DHMOSH operations at UN Headquarters and field duty stations.
  • Assisting with IT-related projects, including the preparation and analysis of health datasets to inform decision-making.
  • Monitoring and analyzing global health policy developments relevant to DHMOSH’s mandate.
  • Proofreading, editing, and refining official documents to ensure accuracy, consistency, and professional tone.
  • Conducting in-depth research on healthcare trends, policies, and best practices through document reviews and online searches.
  • Drafting and editing content for print, web, and multimedia platforms to enhance public health communications.
  • Aiding in the end-to-end planning and execution of conferences, specialized workshops, and high-level meetings.
  • Employing the Microsoft Office ecosystem including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook to produce detailed reports, dynamic presentations, and professional correspondence.
  • Undertaking additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Academic Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Applicants should be in their final year of an undergraduate degree program (baccalaureate or equivalent) or have recently obtained such a qualification.

No prior professional work experience is required. However, the applicant’s academic training, advanced coursework, or specialized skills should align with the internship’s focus and benefit the United Nations during the assignment.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of French is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in any of the other official languages of the UN, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, will be considered a significant asset.

Selected participants are personally accountable for covering all expenses associated with their internship, including international travel, visa processing fees, housing arrangements, and daily subsistence costs. Furthermore, it is the intern’s sole obligation to secure any necessary entry visas and legal permits required for employment if they are not a national or permanent resident of the host country.
