About UN
For over 85 years, Plan International (commonly known as PLAN) has been at the forefront of the global movement for children’s rights and gender equality. Founded in 1937 amid the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, we began as a child sponsorship organization but have evolved into a comprehensive development force, now operating in more than 75 countries to challenge the systemic barriers that prevent children – especially girls – from reaching their full potential.
Our innovative approach uniquely combines on-the-ground community programs with influential global advocacy, creating sustainable change at both local and international levels. We focus on four key pillars: quality education, comprehensive child protection, youth economic empowerment, and effective humanitarian response. This integrated strategy is exemplified by our groundbreaking Because I Am a Girl campaign, which has become a global symbol for girls’ rights and empowerment.
As an independent NGO, we maintain the flexibility and focus to drive real change, funded primarily by individual supporters, strategic partnerships, and institutional grants. This independence allows us to stay true to our community-driven model while maintaining exceptional standards of transparency – consistently recognized by independent watchdog organizations as one of the world’s most accountable nonprofits.
What sets Plan International apart is our unwavering commitment to putting children, particularly girls, at the center of everything we do. We don’t just provide aid – we build movements, transform systems, and create lasting change that echoes through generations. From rural villages to global policy forums, we’re working tirelessly to create a world where every child can learn, lead, decide, and thrive.
