Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • The Communication & Media Relations Specialist is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies aligned with the ICRC’s operational and institutional priorities. This includes designing and implementing targeted communication activities—such as operational communication, crisis response, community engagement, and the promotion of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)—while continuously evaluating their impact and adapting tools as needed.
  • A key aspect of the role involves cultivating strong relationships with media representatives through regular briefings, press engagements, and strategic outreach to ensure consistent coverage of ICRC initiatives. The specialist oversees public communications, including media messaging, digital content, and information analysis, while managing communication materials and their distribution.
  • The position also focuses on strengthening the communication capacity of the National Red Crescent Society and enhancing the ICRC’s acceptance among key stakeholders, including authorities, community leaders, armed forces, NGOs, and academic institutions. By representing the ICRC in various forums, the specialist actively promotes IHL and humanitarian principles.
  • Additional responsibilities include budget management for communication and prevention activities, interdepartmental coordination, and environmental monitoring to inform the ICRC’s humanitarian response. The role ensures timely follow-up on correspondence and contributes to organizational learning by collecting and sharing relevant data on humanitarian trends and needs.
  • This position plays a critical role in safeguarding the ICRC’s reputation, amplifying its mission, and fostering meaningful engagement with affected communities and decision-makers

Certifications / Education required

  • University degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as communications, political science, international relations or journalism.
  • Fluent spoken and written English and/or French and, when applicable, the local language(s).
  • Computer skills (proficiency in MS Office); familiarity with digital communication tools.

Professional experience required

  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in a field relevant to communication and/or prevention (preferably with the ICRC).
  • Experience in an ICRC operation an asset.
  • IHL knowledge an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of the political, social and media environment in the country/region covered.
