About Plan

Plan International, commonly referred to as PLAN, is a leading global non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing children’s rights and gender equality. Founded in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, PLAN initially focused on child sponsorship but has since expanded its mission to tackle systemic barriers facing children, particularly girls, in over 75 countries. The organization works across key areas including education, child protection, youth economic empowerment, and humanitarian response, combining grassroots community programs with high-level advocacy to drive lasting change.

Unlike government or UN agencies, PLAN operates independently, relying on individual donations, grants, and partnerships to implement its initiatives. Known for its community-driven approach and emphasis on gender equality, PLAN has impacted millions of lives through programs like its flagship Because I Am a Girl campaign, while maintaining a strong reputation for transparency and accountability in the nonprofit sector.

Why choose us

Plan International stands out as a trusted global leader in advancing children’s rights and gender equality, with a proven track record spanning over 85 years. What sets us apart is our unique combination of grassroots community work and global advocacy, creating sustainable change that transforms lives. We take a bold, girl-centered approach to development, challenging systemic barriers through innovative programs like our award-winning “Girls Get Equal” campaign. Our deep community connections in over 75 countries ensure culturally relevant solutions, while our policy work influences international standards for child protection.

Unlike many organizations, we maintain exceptional transparency – consistently receiving top ratings from independent watchdogs – with the vast majority of donations going directly to programs. When emergencies strike, we’re there immediately to protect vulnerable children, then stay to help communities rebuild stronger. By choosing Plan International, you’re investing in more than temporary aid; you’re supporting a movement that empowers children, especially girls, to become leaders who can shape their own futures and create lasting change in their communities. Our holistic approach addresses immediate needs while tackling root causes of inequality, making your support go further to create a fairer world for all children.
